Offset voids of rippled English olive ash and plain holly wood inlaid with double gold–platinum gold leaf create the disappearing central three-dimensional whirlpool effect.
The distinctive stripy pattern of olive ash is caused by a non-invasive bacterium discolouring the softer annual spring growth, which changes the colour of the wood from cream to brown.
