At a fleeting glance, the technique tricks the eye into thinking that the surface is of one form. Yet on close inspection it becomes clear that whilst the pattern is continual, the surface changes from textured to smooth.
Ancient hand skills of relief carving and water gilding create natural shadow and highlight on the carved feathers which then transform into flat marquetry where shading of walnut and 24 carat gold inlays create the feather imagery.
