Inspired by the 2018 Hawaiian Kilauea volcano eruption where lava cut through the earth’s crust creating molten rivers.
The lava flows are represented by polished urushi lacquer and gold metal inlays and the land with natural textural bog oak veneer resembling the scorched earth.
Urushi lacquer is a 9,000-year-old technique of building layers of urushi tree sap resin and coloured metal oxides to create rich colours and a sense of depth and movement. The bog oak’s earthy tones derive from being submerged underground for over 3,000 years in the Norfolk peat fenlands before being excavated by modern deep ploughing.
