LAYERS IN TIME
Layers In Time is Studio SL's first limited edition collection. The collection follows humankind's age-old quest to understand time and its relationship with nature.
Through material explorations, Layers In Time examines how we can stay connected to the past, redefine the present moment, and transmute the future. The collection is a meditation on time, material and transformation, a journey across wood, leather, resin and metal. Here, we explore not only wood’s hues, grains, scent and tactile depth, but also the supple expression of leather, the luminosity of cast resin, and the resilience of metal.
Each piece emerges from a dialogue between artisan and machine, where hand, tool and precision collaborate to reveal surfaces and structures that challenge our sensorial expectations. In this way, we transcend simple function to create sculptural works of presence, each bearing the memory of its making.
SLICE Desk is a sculptural hardwood desk crafted from sustainably sourced native UK timber. Its organic form is shaped by joining three surfaces using complex, hand-cut box joints each uniquely scaled and curved to follow the desk’s fluid edge.
Combining traditional cabinetmaking with CNC precision, SLICE challenges the limits of solid wood. The deep blue finish is achieved with oak gall ink, a pigment rooted in Roman and medieval traditions, which reacts with the wood’s tannins. Layers of liming wax and Osmo oil enhance and protect the tactile surface.
Designed for longevity and connection with natural materials, SLICE reflects a convergence of craftsmanship, technology, and environmental consciousness.
A sculptural celebration of ancient leatherworking, the Chroma Mirror combines traditional craftsmanship with contemporary design.
Two vegetable-tanned leather hides are soaked, laminated, and pressed into a CNC-machined mould, forming a shallow, dish-like silhouette with raised curves. Once dried, the leather retains its sculptural form and becomes a canvas for hand-painted detail using water-based dyes and Japanese calligraphy brushes.
Each stroke builds expressive layers of colour and texture, enhancing the natural grain. A circular mirror sits at the centre, framed by a gold-plated brass surround, while recessed areas are precisely cut to house silvered and gold glass accents.
Chroma is a tactile, timeless piece that honours materiality, process, and the art of slow making.
Inspired by the play of light on water, the Ripple Mirror captures the fluid motion of colliding ripples.
Burgundy coach-hide leather is shaped over concentric waves using CNC-machined moulds, relying on its natural elasticity to form a sculptural surface. A central hand-silvered mirror anchors the design, framed by hand-chased textures that mimic the highlights and shadows found on water in motion. Finished with a natural wax polish, the leather’s depth and movement are enhanced through careful tooling.
Extensive prototyping and iterative design led to the final form, with each ripple carefully refined to balance rhythm and surface tension. The result is a striking, tactile piece that celebrates materiality, motion, and the quiet drama of rain on still water.
A sculptural exploration of light, material, and form, the Lumen Side Table features a pebble-shaped resin top with a central translucent window that funnels daylight through the piece, casting shifting shadows below. Surrounding this lens, eight tones of hand-laid French straw in reds, golds, ochres, and browns, radiate like a warm halo, echoing the colours of autumn.
The table is grounded by three oversized, hand-turned English oak legs with chip-carved detailing, offering both boldness and tactile refinement. Lumen combines heritage woodworking with material innovation. Years of research into embedding straw endgrain in resin have resulted in a surface that is both technically precise and visually luminous, celebrating seasonality, craftsmanship, and the quiet poetry of light.
The table and bench have been inspired by the striking salt pan floor of Deadvlei, Namibia. The coffee table’s top marquetry is composed of oak oysters - the end-grain of an oak tree, where the growth rings reveal the tree’s history. Set between the cracks of the clay pan–inspired oak oyster veneer top, a polished bronze inlay flows seamlessly below the surface.
The table’s shaped edges are crafted from laminated oak veneer, creating a chevron-style pattern. Polished bronze legs pass through a cluster of laminated oak forms, each one individually hand-shaped to mirror the soft, eroded contours of the clay pan–inspired top.
The bench’s top features a padded, burgundy vegetable-tanned coach-hide leather seat paired with oak oyster marquetry.
With soft geometry inspired by Art Deco, the Puzzle Panels explore pattern, light, and surface. Sandblasting Larch creates a natural relief in the grain, finished with enriching walnut ink and pale liming wax for tonal contrast and texture. The panels can be arranged in limitless combinations to create unique configurations.
STUDIO SL
Studio SL is Silverlining’s in-house design team. Since its creation in 2005, it has been a place where ideas are tested, challenged and refined into physical form. It is where creative instinct meets technical understanding, and where drawings become details, and details become heirlooms.
Bringing together designers from a range of backgrounds and disciplines, the studio is united by a shared belief in quality, beauty and the importance of craft. There is no single style or formula. What defines our work is a collective ability to translate ideas into meaningful, enduring pieces. To listen with care, to imagine with clarity and to respond with confidence.
