STUDIO SL

Studio SL is Silverlining’s in-house design studio. Created in 2005 to deepen the dialogue between concept and craft, it is where ideas take shape, from the first sketch to the final detail. Today, the studio is composed of a team of designers, each with a distinct design voice and a shared commitment to excellence.

Studio SL

At Studio SL, design is never an isolated gesture. Every idea is developed in close collaboration with our workshop teams, drawing on decades of shared experience across material innovation, construction and finishing. Together, we explore how tradition can evolve and how form and function can be reimagined for today’s most discerning collectors.

What defines Studio SL is its ability to respond to the unexpected. Many of our most ambitious projects have been shaped by the questions our clients ask, questions that often require us to invent something entirely new. These external challenges have pushed us to expand our processes, rethink materials and build original solutions from the ground up.

“It isn’t just a piece of furniture, it’s a journey.”

Case Study 1

One such project began with a simple concept: a breakfast table inspired by the interlocking geometry of fine jewellery. The resulting piece featured a sculptural base made of wenge wood and mirror-polished nickel, echoing the flowing forms found in high jewellery and contemporary sculpture.

The tabletop, lacquered in vibrant layers of lava red, silver and charcoal black urushi, was bordered with mocha-toned wood and inlaid with reflective detailing. Elegant and meticulously resolved, the piece stood at the intersection of ornament and architecture.

Case Study 2

In another commission, the design team was asked to create two wave-inspired pieces: a cabinet and a desk with an integrated pull-out chair that, when closed, mirrors the cabinet's form. Each piece features undulating waves flowing seamlessly across façade and sides, their complex sculptural surfaces first hand-drawn, then traced in 2D CAD, modelled in 3D, and precisely cut using a 5-axis CNC router. The varying door thickness required custom-engineered brushed bronze-brass pivot hinges to ensure perfect alignment.

Once shaped, each cabinet was veneered in custom-dyed taupe quilted maple, its figured patterns reminiscent of sun-dappled water. The complex wave forms demanded that every piece of veneer be hand-cut and fitted with absolute precision. A hand-burnished super-satin lacquer finish completes the surface, capturing light like water itself.

Whether working on bespoke commissions or developing limited edition pieces, the studio brings the same clarity of vision, respect for craft and attention to detail to every project. Our role is to express Silverlining’s creative identity through furniture that endures. Pieces that embody complexity with elegance and design with purpose.
