Marquetry Firework

The Firework sample was developed as an exploration into new ways of using straw marquetry beyond its traditional applications. In earlier Silverlining works, straw had been used in a more traditional manner creating surface-covering patterns. However, the straw’s natural iridescence evoked the shimmering trails of fireworks, inspiring a more expressive and dynamic approach.

To highlight both craftsmanship and creative technique, the straw was combined with custom dyed figured sycamore veneer. The subtle tones of the sycamore provide a contrast that complements the luminous quality of the straw without overwhelming it.

The furniture concept for the sample applies the marquetry explosions to a large tabletop. The table base is intentionally visually light to draw attention to the colourful and playful patterns on the feature top. As you move around the piece the shards appear to move and almost lift off the table as the light plays with the iridescent quality of the straw.

The final design takes inspiration from the festive spirit of traditional firework displays, capturing their energy and light through a carefully balanced interplay of materials and texture.
