Reverie
REVERIE
Reverie is Studio SL's second limited edition collection. Reverie is a dream-like vignette in which contemporary craftsmanship and traditional materials unite in a modern expression of thoughtful design.
Rooted in North Wales, the collection draws inspiration from the landscape on the studio's doorstep including locally sourced timber. The organic forms and natural materials reflect the beauty that surrounds the team every day. The collection comprises the Dôl Chair, the Awen Chandelier, the Troell Sconce, and
the Dolen Side Table.
The Dôl Chair has been inspired by the gentle contours of the Dee Valley, dôl meaning meadow in Welsh. The chair is a sculptural study in the expressive potential of timber, with its generous form and asymmetrical profile.
Carved from stacked layers of locally felled Douglas fir wood, the chair is shaped using five-axis CNC machining to navigate its complex compound curves, yet it is also deeply defined by hand craftsmanship. Silverlining's craftspeople carefully selected the grain, block-laminated the timber, and sandblasted and hand-sanded the piece, resulting in its graduated texture - rugged at the base, softening toward the smooth armrest like glacial sculpting of the Welsh landscapes.
Finally, a layer of White Rubio oil was also applied by hand to protect the surfaces and to enhance the play of light and shadow. The natural variation of the timber means no two chairs will ever look alike, each one revealing its own unique pattern of side and end-grain.
Commanding in scale, the Awen Chandelier is a 1.5-metre diameter centrepiece that brings together leather and blown glass craftsmanship. Its principal material is burgundy coach-hide leather - looped, folded, tack-stitched, and skived by hand - complemented by Douglas fir wood veneer.
Awen is the Welsh word for creative inspiration - the breath of life that transforms raw natural materials into art. The inherent character of leather as a natural material was both the central challenge and the animating spirit of the Chandelier.
Working at the 1.5-metre diameter required Silverlining's leather craftspeople to shape the material into a form that retains its organic fluidity while maintaining its intended shape. The chandelier was made in collaboration with lighting experts Luce5.
The Troell Sconce plays with the natural properties of leather to create a ribbon-like wall light - troell being the Welsh word for spiral.
The reverse face of the leather is textured using a ball hammering technique and then hand-decorated and split to reveal colour in the texture, emphasising Studio SL’s unique developed process. A central light source, positioned within the flowing form, casts both upward and downward light through two sculpted art glass panels. These subtly distort the light, casting ribbon-like patterns across the leather folds and the immediate wall surface.
Like the chandelier, the sconce was made in collaboration with Luce5.
